Often with interior design, we’re looking to the future... but what if we travelled back to the past instead?
Looking to your favourite decades when refreshing your home can be an interesting way to add character to a space as it provides inspiration for furniture, accessories, colour palettes, and even the atmosphere you’d like to create. We were inspired by the classic novel The Great Gatsby this week: a stellar story of glitter-studded, champagne-fuelled, art deco parties set in the 1920s—the perfect source of inspiration for a dressing room makeover.
With the 1920s being renowned for flapper dresses and flowing fabric, we’ve incorporated plants and pampas grass into our accessories to add texture and soften the geometric shapes of the dressing table and mirror. Bringing in flowers also adds a touch of luxury to dressing tables so you can romanticise each morning—even when getting ready for work rather than a Gatsby party!
Other elements we’ve taken from the decade include black and gold accents throughout: the trick to incorporating heritage design trends into your home without looking too traditional is to identify key colours that can be found in modern pieces. Black and gold is a timeless combination, so we’ve added in details such as a sleek black vase and gold-edged jewellery case for a subtle contemporary update to our 1920s theme.
Our final tip for creating an interior style inspired by your favourite decade is to ensure that above all, your space is functional. The room should be usable and practical, so incorporating furniture which mirrors aspects of your chosen era can be a subtle way to build in elements while also providing storage or surface spaces. Shaker style cupboards and dressers can reference the clean lines and geometry found in the art deco period, yet are modern enough to still be a coveted piece of furniture in the 2020s.
