Organising your wardrobe in 4 steps

Embarking on a wardrobe detox can feel like a daunting experience, and often that it needs to be an all or nothing task. Our favourite way to rejuvenate our wardrobes and bring some much-needed organisation into our home is by applying a 4-step process little and often. The 4-step approach to clearing your wardrobe is a process, that rather than making big decisions on what to keep and what to throw away which can often feel like a huge task, focuses on keeping, storing, mending, and donating (or throwing away if they’re beyond saving!).

This brings a breath of fresh air to both your wardrobe and your personal style. By applying this process to your wardrobe every season, you’ll discover hidden gems that you’ve maybe not worn in a while or make some room in your wardrobe for a shopping splurge. Let’s dive into the 4 steps!

  1. Decide what to store: begin by identifying seasonal items that are currently out of rotation. Whether it’s winter coats in the summer, or strappy dresses and sandals in the summer, pack these items away into storage to make more room in your wardrobe for the clothes you’ll wear. This also speeds up your mornings by helping you to focus on the clothes relevant to the current season!
  2. Decide what to keep: assess each piece in your wardrobe with a critical eye. Keep any items that align with your style, fit you well, and make you feel confident. There’s no point keeping anything that doesn’t make you feel great when you put it on! Consider the versatility of each item and its potential to match with other clothing in your wardrobe to create a cohesive wardrobe.
  3. Identify any items that need repairing: Before you throw anything away, check whether it can be salvaged through simple repairs. Items with loose buttons, frayed hems, or small tears can often be fixed with a bit of mending. Create a separate pile for these and make time to repair before adding back to your wardrobe.
  4. Bid farewell to any unwanted items: now comes the time to part ways with any clothes that no longer serve you. Whether due to wear and tear, outdated styles, or items that you simply don’t like anymore—let them go! Consider donating to a second hand or charity store or organise a clothing swap with friends to give your garments a new life.

By storing seasonal items, keeping only what aligns with your style, mending where possible, and saying goodbye to clothes you don’t want, you can organise your wardrobe to become a curated closet that feels revitalised and refreshed.
