How to use dark colours to transform your bedroom

How to use dark colours to transform your bedroom

When used well, dark colours in your bedroom can create a cocooning effect, complementing your natural sleep cycles for a deeper, more restful night’s sleep.

However, these shades aren't suitable for all spaces, and there are guidelines to follow when you do use them. If you're looking for dark colour schemes for the bedrooms in your home, here are some ideas to try and considerations to make before you update your décor.

Consider the space

When you plan how to approach decorating your bedrooms, think about each one in turn and play to the room's strengths.

Dark colours applied in a small spare room aren't the same in a larger space. This is because deeper tones suit relatively small bedrooms, as well as those lacking natural light. In more compact rooms, drenching the walls in a rich shade can create a feeling of depth and make a bold statement.

In larger bedrooms, you can create a cosy feel with a darker palette. However, the colours you choose and how you introduce them for the master bedroom require some thought. This space lends itself to a mixture of light and dark, where you can stick to neutrals on the walls and incorporate dark furniture for a neat contrast.

Blend soft and strong shades

We've already mentioned colour drenching. This can be extremely effective, but there needs to be a blend of hues in order to avoid feeling claustrophobic.

Keeping the ceiling white or a lighter shade can even out the darker tones. Similarly, keep to lighter flooring. For instance, if you've chosen a deep blue for the walls, a cream rug will provide the perfect contrast.

Matching different shades in the same colour also provides a striking effect. Maybe you've decided on violet walls in your bedroom. This beautiful, dark colour works with furniture that complements it, such as a purple sliding wardrobe. Similarly, bold navy furniture seamlessly blends with softer blue walls in that palette.

Stick with cooler colours

A cooler colour palette can make your room feel colder. While being cosy is key, feeling cooler helps you to get a good night's sleep.

Blue is proven to be the most restful colour and there is a range of shades that you can incorporate. For example, you could experiment with jewel tones for a contemporary look. While blue is not a warm colour choice, midnight blue or even navy can create a snug feel.

To balance out the blues, try mixing in earthy colours like greens and browns. Wooden furniture and mossy green accessories can bring muted warmth to the space while keeping you grounded and not overstimulating you when resting.

Go bold with monochrome

Monochrome is an enduring design trend that will always be in style. You can make this look your own by adapting it to suit your home and your taste.

But, while black and white is a classic choice, you may want to soften things by incorporating greys. This can be especially important in larger rooms, where leaning towards lighter whites with dramatic black accents is ideal. Incorporating black and grey in rugs, curtains, bedding and furniture can enhance a larger room and create a striking monochrome effect.

For smaller bedrooms, your monochrome colour scheme can lean more towards black or have a 50/50 split.
