How to spring clean your bedroom
Freshen up your bedroom in time for the new season with these spring cleaning tips.
The days are getting longer. Temperatures are starting to climb to double figures. Spring is on its way. It's about this time of year that many people start cleaning their homes in preparation for the new season. It's a symbol of leaving behind the dark depths of winter and looking forward to brighter skies ahead.
We think a good spring clean should start in the bedroom. Here's our step-by-step guide to help you rejuvenate your sleep space, along with some general spring cleaning tips.
To start things off, there's nothing like having a good clearout. Break down your bedroom into different areas. Start with smaller surfaces, bedside drawers and those random places where clutter tends to accumulate. Then, work your way up to decluttering those bigger drawer and wardrobe spaces.
Be strategic with what you keep and what you choose to get rid of; it helps to know what the criteria look like before you start. Have you had enough of those "things" you have but don't use? Are you trying to streamline your wardrobe? Keep what you will use and appreciate, recycle or donate what someone else might be able to use, and throw away anything that's of no use to anyone.
While you're decluttering, keep surfaces mostly clear by finding a spot for everything that doesn't need to be out. It will make it far easier when you come to clean.
With a clear idea of what you're keeping, it's time to store everything again. But don't just throw everything back where you found it. Take a look at what space you have and how you can best use it.
If your drawers haven't been clearly organised, assign each one a purpose. For example, one could be for underwear and socks, another for tops and jumpers. Having a more organised system should help you when you're getting dressed every day. Find somewhere out of the way to store your out-of-season clothes – this might be your thicker winter gear as spring starts to emerge.
Your wardrobe might need more work. Making better use of the space could be done with more hangers, shelves or boxes placed underneath. Choose which things definitely need to be hung to avoid overcrowding, and fold away other things that don't. The ideal solution in the long term might be some custom-built fitted wardrobes that make the best use of your bedroom space.
Keep any daily essentials out on shelving or in neatly organised boxes for easy access. But don't put these back just yet – you'll need clear surfaces for the next part.
A good amount of dust has probably accumulated over the winter months – this needs sorting before you can clean the surfaces. Use a microfibre duster on shelves, furniture, light fixtures and other places it usually gathers. Don't forget those out-of-sight spots like door frames and on top of your wardrobe.
Once dust-free, give your bedroom surfaces a good wipe-down with some cleaning wipes or an all-purpose surface cleaner. Be careful not to use anything too harsh on natural surfaces like wood. Make sure to cover windowsills and frames, your bed frame and the surfaces inside drawers and wardrobes.
Next, turn your attention to the floor. Vacuum everywhere you can – you may need to shuffle some furniture around to get access to some areas. For smaller rugs that can't be vacuumed, take them outside and give them a good shake to remove dust and debris.
Finally, clean your windows with a dedicated glass cleaning solution that doesn't leave streaks. This should give you a new perspective on the outside and maximise the amount of light coming in. Clean your mirrors while you're doing the windows too.
If you haven't already recently, strip the bed and fit some fresh bedding to mark the new start for your bedroom. There's nothing like slipping into fresh sheets at the end of a long day. It's the icing on the cake for a bedroom that's been cleaned and decluttered.
You may want to swap to a lighter duvet as temperatures start to warm up. Also, take this opportunity to flip or rotate your mattress if that's needed.
It's worth leaving your windows open while you're spring cleaning and decluttering to let in some fresh air. This should help to remove any lingering smells that have gathered. Using some essential oils, candles or a fabric spray should add an extra pleasant scent.
With more light shining through the windows, consider swapping thicker winter curtains for a thinner set. Some new plants or décor could also breathe some new life into your fresh bedroom ready for the warmer months ahead.
