How to make your bedroom warmer in winter

How to make your bedroom warmer in winter

As the weather turns chilly, it's time to snuggle up and keep toasty. Staying warm in your bedroom is especially important at this time of year because being at a comfortable temperature will ensure you get a good night's sleep. But cranking up the heating can be both costly and bad for the planet as you're using more energy.

If you're wondering how to warm up your bedroom without having to turn the heating on, check out our cosy bedroom ideas.

Invest in winter-friendly bedding

Swap your summer bedding for something warmer. Begin by focusing on the tog number of your duvet. The higher the number, the warmer the duvet. Typically, a 9 to 13.5 tog is ideal for the cooler months. Adding blankets, quilts and throws can add warmth on cold nights.

Also, choose memory foam or heat-trapping materials for your pillows and heat-retentive mattress toppers. These additions will lock in the warmth and keep you cosy while you sleep.

Insulate windows

Windows are one of the main sources of heat loss, especially if they aren't properly insulated. If the windows only have single glazing, they could lose as much as 20% of the property's heat. Therefore, if you currently have single glazing, it's worth taking steps to upgrade to double or even triple glazing. Triple glazing provides even more insulation. It's also around 30% more energy efficient than double-glazed windows and can reduce heating bills by up to 60%.

As well as upgrading your windows, there are other ways to add insulation. Sealing tape or caulking seals the gaps between the window and the frame, preventing draughts. Also, investing in insulated curtains or thermal blinds will provide an added layer of heat protection, keeping the room warm and preventing heat from escaping.

Incorporate warm colours and textures

Steering away from cool neutrals and towards warm colour palettes filled with deep reds, rich browns and dark blues can make your bedroom feel warm and cosy, as though you're cocooned. Choose colours that make you feel calm and safe.

Consider the textures you introduce too. Layering wool blankets and thick knits with faux fur rugs can make the space feel warm and comforting.

Lighting is another key addition, especially in the winter when daylight is limited. Scented candles and lamps with warm-tone LED bulbs can lend a soothing feel to the bedroom.

Use fitted wardrobes

Large pieces of furniture can make excellent draught excluders and insulators. Investing in fitted wardrobes and placing them on external walls can add a layer of insulation to your bedroom and block out cold air pockets in the corners of the room.

With fitted wardrobes from Hammonds, you can also customise how they're set up. This means you can incorporate dedicated storage for blankets, throws and winter bedding essentials like heavier duvets. You can easily access everything you need to transform your bedroom once winter hits hardest.

Add layers underfoot

Thick rugs are the perfect addition to trap heat and make floors feel warmer. Even if you have carpets in your bedroom, adding this layer can add warmth.

It's also worth considering your bedroom floor. If you have wooden floors, these can be cooler than carpets as there are often gaps between each plank. You may wish to swap to carpeted flooring in your bedroom. There are also insulated vinyl options that retain heat and are warmer than traditional wooden flooring.
