How to fill your home with positive energy

How to fill your home with positive energy

The nights are getting lighter and spring is fast approaching, making this the ideal time to focus on bringing positive energy into your living space. If you're ready to make some changes and create an uplifting environment, here are some ideas that will help you feel good at home.

Have a clear-out

Decluttering is the perfect starting point. By taking the time to remove the things you no longer need or want, you can free up space for the things that bring you joy.

Begin by sorting through your belongings. Create piles for the things to keep, to donate and to throw away. By getting rid of items that you don't want in your home, you remove negativity.

If there's a lot of decluttering required, tackling each room in turn will help you to stay on track. You might want to start downstairs where there may not be as much clutter. This allows you to build up to the bigger jobs upstairs where you might have to take on your wardrobe.

Another way to declutter successfully is to focus on one area in short bursts of around 10 to 15 minutes a day. Known as micro decluttering, this gives you the chance to zero in on what you want and need in your home and prevents overwhelm.

Once you know what you want to keep, you can invest in storage. Reassess your current storage setup and introduce new options, such as shelving or built-in understairs storage.

Keep on top of cleaning

Now that you've cleared everything away, you can focus on cleaning each room to freshen up your home. If you haven't before, this is a good time to introduce a regular cleaning routine which ensures you keep everything tidy, creating a positive space.

Dusting is a great way to detox the space. Focus on each surface in turn to revitalise the room.

Make sure to do a deep clean of high-traffic areas like the kitchen and bathroom. As they're such busy rooms in the home, it can be tricky to create a soothing energy in these spaces, so making the time for an intensive clean-up can make a big difference.

Remove blockages in high-traffic areas

As well as cleaning high-traffic rooms, try to keep these areas clear of clutter. This will create flow in your home.

To do this, start at the front door and walk through the downstairs. Tidy away coats and shoes in hallways and near doors. Then remove anything that's been left on the stairs and store away anything that's been left on the landings.

As well as these physical blockages, keeping windows closed can make the air stuffy and stagnant. Opening them allows fresh air inside, which helps make it feel good to be at home.

Maximise the light

Natural light is good for our well-being. Having plenty of access to light during the daytime – and darkness when we go to bed – keeps us in tune with our circadian rhythms. These rhythms are our natural body clock that tells us when to be active and when to rest. By introducing as much natural light as possible into your home during the day, therefore, you're introducing positivity and making yourself feel good in your living space.

To bring in the light, focus on your window dressings. You might want to consider swapping out dark, heavy curtains for light blinds or sheer materials.

It's also worth reconsidering the colour scheme in your home in alignment with this approach. Whites and lighter hues can reflect the light that comes in, creating a fresh, airy feel. Mirrors can help enhance light levels too, reflecting these light paint colours around your home.
