Hazy sunsets watched while we sink our toes into golden sand next to a sea vista… we’re loving UK staycations this year. Whether Whitby or Whitley, or a trip to the sunny south, the UK seaside has plenty to offer.
And if you’ve fallen head over heels for holiday strolls in the sea air with an abundance of fish and chips nearby, you can bring the beach home with you! As a timeless style which emphasises calm and rest through a marine colour palette and natural textures, coastal interior design keeps everyday stresses at bay.
It’s a fine line to walk with coastal interiors: lean too hard in the niche nautical direction and your space begins to feel gimmicky, but stray too far from seaside colours and you’ll lose the gentle coastal charm. Our favourite way to experiment with this interior style is to pull details and colours directly from your favourite sunny holiday snaps. The personal touch adds familiarity to your home, for a coastal space which doesn’t feel cheesy, while also reminding you of treasured family memories.
Treasured family memories incidentally fall under one of 2024’s (and ours!) most loved trends so far—celebrating what makes your home yours. Whether blending vintage beach accessories you’ve had for years into your updated interiors, framing souvenirs, or using your favourite destination as inspiration—classic coastal is the updated neutral base you didn’t know you needed. The wispy greys and vanilla-tinted creams found in this interior style offset saturated colours and patterns beautifully. Oceanic blues form a fashionable contrast when paired with soft corals or beach-hut banana yellow, and greens are a fantastic way to ground airy shades.
Not to rock the boat too much, but one element of coastal décor we’d recommend steering clear from is opting for signs or coastal-themed accessories with slogans. By opting for seaside colours instead of text, and classic colour palettes inspired by the beach, you create a truly relaxing home which grows alongside your interior tastes.
We used the nostalgic holiday favourite Margate (found at the very edge of Kent) as our inspiration for our own interior moodboard. Head over to Instagram to share which destination you’d love to use as inspo!
