Plants as home décor are more than just a styling accessory… they’re (literally) a breath of fresh air! These leafy plants clean the air, reducing airborne toxins and pollutants while giving your space an oxygenated boost. Our favourite is the much-loved Cheese Plant: a climbing plant which keeps air cleaner due to its broad leaves. This purifying plant powerhouse can even remove nasties such as formaldehyde, benzene, and trichloroethylene (often found in degreasing or metal cleaning products) from your home! Other brilliant choices if you’re looking for a hardworking plant include the Boston Fern and the Spider Plant, which both feature lush green foliage that reduces pollutants. These three plants all featured on a NASA-conducted study for filtering capacity!
But not all plants are the same. Some are tricky to keep alive, no matter how much sunlight or water you give them, or may be harmful for your pets.
If you’re a new plant parent or just curating a greenery wishlist, low-maintenance plants that thrive on little care are an ideal choice. Snake Plants are hardy and need little watering, as well as being accompanied by NASA’s seal of approval for its air purifying qualities. This vibrant and verdant little plant is perfect for desks or shelves when it’s smaller, but can grow to 90cm. Succulents are a classic choice if you struggle to keep plants alive, and can be picked up for a low cost! Our favourite is Burro’s Tail, a trailing succulent with a preference for bright sunshine. If you’re looking to fill a larger space in your home, but without the upkeep, a Bamboo Palm is perfect. This plant enjoys most spots in a home as long as the sun isn’t direct, as this may burn its leaves.
When it comes to picking plants that your furry friends will be safe around, our favourite three choices are: the Prayer Plant, Fairy Washboard, and Cacti. The Prayer Plant features distinctively patterned leaves, which we love for adding interest to spaces without worrying about our pets! Fairy Washboard is a spiky plant that’s reminiscent of Aloe Vera’s distinctive shape—and while cats and dogs may not enjoy chewing on these ridged leaves, the plant is non-toxic. Cacti include their own protection against pets in the form of their spiny exterior, but are also safe for animals.
