We’re taking a moment with Alice Gaskell, the interior designer behind Alice Grace Interiors, to explore her newly refreshed bedroom. Alice’s work is renowned for her use of layering warm neutrals and incorporating splashes of pattern to create a cosy home steeped in classic English design.
This timeless decorating style has been known by many monikers on social media recently: cottagecore, English countryside, bookshelf wealth… but this décor’s key ethos is creating a classic home which feels lived-in and welcoming.
Alice opted for our Langton style in the shade Sea Salt, a shaker-inspired design elevated with a bold geometric pattern carved from wood over the main door panels (known as fretwork). By combining the solid wooden doors with mirrored glass panels, Alice has created a calming space that’s overflowing with interest and texture for a Pinterest-worthy bedroom.
Sea Salt also beautifully echoes one of 2024’s key trends: a splash of blue. This subtle shade is a breath of fresh air in a space, with Alice’s approach to colour focusing on gentle muted shades with a varied palette selection. Read on for our Q&A with Alice, discussing her design style and how she begins a bedroom design:
Q: How would you describe your design style in three words?
Elegant, timeless and distinctive
Q: How do you approach a bedroom design?
Often a design might start with a piece of existing furniture, or perhaps a picture or a rug, wallpaper or fabric sample that either we or our client has fallen in love with. From there that can act as a wonderful base from which to create a design for a bedroom. We then will look at the positioning of the room—the direction it faces, as well as the surrounding spaces to help us choose a suitable palette from which to build all our layers! We also love to consider clever built-in storage which has become a real focus of our design studio—so many houses we work with lack suitable options so creating unique solutions that maximise the available space whilst seamlessly blending them in with the overall design is very important to us.
Q: What is your best tip for styling a bedroom?/How do you create an Insta-worthy bedroom?
I am a bit advocate for bedrooms that are calm and uncluttered. Obviously, children’s bedrooms are a little different—but it is important to us that whilst we do like having open shelves to offer easy access to books and some toys, realistically offering plenty of hidden storage in the form of under-bed drawers, plenty of cupboard and drawer space will never be regretted! There is nothing better than setting the tone for time in a bedroom that is suitably calm and devoid of chaos.
Q: Colours are huge for 2024… how would you describe your approach to colour?
We are typically drawn to a colourful but muted palette - nothing that is overly bright but certainly we are not shy of introducing a varied and brave selection of colours. Our studio often uses quite an earthy, quite autumnal look inspired by nature which is so easy to match and blend with. A complete fail safe in our eyes!
Q: Which summer trends do you love?
Florals—we always love to add an element of floral in our designs!
We’ll definitely be adding Alice’s new bedroom to our moodboards. Let us know what you think of her transformation over on Instagram!
